BRUNSWICK — Katherine H. Zimmerman, 97, died Oct. 3, 2013, at Mere Point long-term care facility in Brunswick, ME. Daughter of Frederick D. and Katherine Hinchman Hopkins, she was born in Goshen, NY, on Feb. 12, 1916, and grew up in Glen Rock, NJ.

She graduated from Ridgewood, NJ, High School and Syracuse University where she met her husband, Albert G. Zimmerman. They were married in Glen Rock in 1939.

During World War II she worked as a Red Cross nurse’s aide and later volunteered at St. Barnabas Hospital, Livingston, NJ, where they had settled to raise their family. Together with her husband she enjoyed an active social life with many friends, playing golf, bowling, playing card games with neighbors, and, in later years, traveling extensively. She was a member of the AAUW, the Women’s Club, and was director of the Altar Guild at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Livingston. In 1977 they retired to Maine, building a home on Great Island, Harpswell, where they remained until moving to an apartment in the Thornton Oaks retirement center, Brunswick.

Along with her husband she was an avid sports fan, the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox her two favorites. To the end of her life she remained devoted to her beloved Syracuse University Orange, traveling to Syracuse to sit court-side at an SU basketball game for her 94th birthday. Her greatest personal enjoyment, after her family, was reading historical fiction, biographies, and English murder mysteries.

She was predeceased by her husband, Albert, and her sister, Margaret H. Freeman.
