As the brilliant colors of fall recede and winter approaches, there is much to be thankful for while we hunker down and transition our activities indoors. With frosty mornings and perhaps a heightened need to get out of the house, we invite you to come join us at Pineland Farms for any one of our numerous family programs, workshops or events.

Come get started on your holiday decorations by learning how to make balsam fir wreaths with the family on Dec. 6, 10, 11, 16 or 17 (ages 3 and up). For the first time we are offering an adult wreath-making class from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. These beautiful, handmade wreaths make wonderful gifts or can be used to decorate your own home.

This winter we are excited to introduce our three event series, “Light up the Farm!” Our first event is from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6. This family-friendly event will be filled with crafts, refreshments, holiday music and a tree lighting. In addition to our special events, join us at our weekly “Friday on the Farm.” It is a great way to introduce and reconnect kids with our farming heritage as they learn where milk comes from, get a chance to milk a cow, and collect chicken eggs.

Lastly, in anticipation of the coming holidays, we encourage each of you to think about where the food on your holiday table comes from. Don’t forget who and what is behind each delicious bite of turkey or steamed broccoli that makes its way onto your fork.

Here in Maine we have approximately 8,100 farms and 1.3 million acres of farmland. This is a wonderful time of year to take a moment and appreciate what makes living in Maine so special: our tradition of local food, farming and community.

If local food sparks an interest, come out to the Market at Pineland Farms. We have local poultry, beef, potatoes, baked goods and even craft beers. Get a jump-start on the delightfully mouthwatering aromas that lure your family and friends into the kitchen, and enjoy this holiday season!
