NEW ON THE SHELF

“CLOSED CIRCUIT,” Eric Bana, Rebecca Hall. Suitably paranoid thriller finds defense attorney Bana forced to work alongside old flame and special advocate Hall to gather information regarding a terrorist bombing in downtown London, an act that detained suspect and heroin addict Farroukh (Denis Moschitto, “No Regrets”) appears to know something about, but isn’t talking. Meanwhile, representatives from both sides of the law watch their every move, a reality that adds further stress to an already complex situation. While a promisingly crafty opening eventually gives way to a more typical thriller motif, director John Crowley (“Intermission”) ratchets up the tension throughout, and an excellent cast (which also includes Jim Broadbent and Ciaran Hinds) effectively sell some of the less believable developments. Rated R. Running time: 1:36. Suggested retail price: $29.98; Blu-ray $34.98.

“RUNNER RUNNER,” Justin Timberlake, Ben Affleck. A debt-ridden Ivy League scholar (Timberlake) faces off against the owner (Affleck) of a crooked online gambling website, only to be drawn into the immoral but lucrative business practices of Affleck’s mini-empire, a partnership that gets severely tested when an FBI agent (Anthony Mackie, “Pain & Gain”) comes sniffing around looking for potential witnesses to bring the scamming conglomerate down. From the screenwriters who gave us “Rounders,” “Runner Runner” fails to hit the exhilarating highs of that similarly gambling-centric 1998 feature, but it spins a compelling yarn all the same, and Affleck has fun camping it up a bit as the sneering villain. Rated R. Running time: 1:31.Suggested retail price: $29.98; Blu-ray $39.99.

“THANKS FOR SHARING,” Mark Ruffalo, Tim Robbins. The subject of sex addiction is rarely broached with any sort of sensitivity or accuracy in the world of entertainment, often exploited for cheap laughs or dismissed outright, but “Thanks for Sharing” manages to be both heartfelt and genuinely amusing, exploring the criss-crossing lives of three sex addicts (portrayed by Ruffalo, Robbins and Josh Gad) in various stages of their recovery. Special features include a commentary from co-writer/director Stuart Blumberg and co-writer Matt Winston. Rated R. Running time: 1:52. Suggested retail price: $19.98; Blu-ray $24.99.

NEW TO DVD

“ARCHER: THE COMPLETE SEASON FOUR,” animated, with the voices of H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler. Everybody’s favorite incredibly inappropriate superspy does some globetrotting this season, taking his terrible mother and unhelpful co-workers along for the ride. Taking care not to fix what isn’t broken, “Archer” is just one hilarious one-liner (all expertly delivered by one of the funniest voice casts on TV) and ridiculous situation after another, and there’s even a “Bob’s Burgers” crossover for Benjamin fans. Not rated. Running time: 4:46. Suggested retail price: $29.98; Blu-ray $39.99.

“THE FOLLOWING: THE COMPLETE SEASON ONE,” Kevin Bacon, James Purefoy. Viewers who miss the grisly thrills of “Dexter” would do well to check out this popular serial killer drama, which follows formerly retired FBI agent Bacon as he attempts to thwart the wide-reaching actions of Purefoy (“Solomon Kane”), a highly intelligent killer with a cult of like-minded disciples willing to carry out his every twisted, deadly directive. What starts as a fairly by-the-numbers plot takes more than a few unexpected turns thanks to the consistently clever script from creator Kevin Williamson (“Scream”), and Bacon and Purefoy make for an enjoyably antagonistic team-of-sorts. Addictive TV that improves steadily as it goes along. Not rated. Running time: 18:45. Suggested retail price: $39.98; Blu-ray $49.99.

“INEQUALITY FOR ALL,” documentary. Former secretary of labor, current professor of economics and always a champion for the middle class, if anyone knows a thing or two about money, it’s Robert Reich, the heart, soul and face of this informative and eye-opening documentary detailing the cause of our current gap between the haves and have-nots, and what it might take to go about constructing a bridge. In the end, there is more data than answers here, but as a conversation starter “Inequality for All” is unassailable. Rated PG. Running time: 1:29. Suggested retail price: $24.98; Blu-ray $29.99.

NEW TO BLU-RAY

“THRONE OF BLOOD,” Toshiro Mifune, Isuzu Yamada. A classic Kurosawa adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” from 1957, “Throne of Blood” has been painstakingly remastered for the Criterion Collection and has never looked or sounded better, with special features including a making-of documentary and a commentary from Japanese-film expert Michael Jeck. Not rated. Running time: 1:49. Suggested retail price: $39.95.

VIDEOPORT PICKS

“THE ACT OF KILLING,” documentary. Just when you think there’s nothing left for documentarians to shock the general populace with, along comes filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer (“The Globalisation Tapes”) and “The Act of Killing,” a risky and potentially offensive endeavor that pays off in some unexpected and rewarding ways. Oppenheimer travels to Indonesia on a singular mission: to interest some of the men responsible for mass murdering thousands of suspected communists in the 1960s in filming recreations of their killings in whatever genre – be it western or musical or what have you – they prefer. Surprisingly, they accept, forcing the men to relive and re-evaluate their horrific actions. A brave and one-of-a-kind experience, “Killing” is practically a lock for the Best Documentary Oscar and essential viewing. Not rated. Running time: 1:55. Suggested retail price: $27.95; Blu-ray: $29.95.

“TOP OF THE LAKE,” Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men”) and Holly Hunter star in writer/director Jane Campion’s (“The Piano”) New Zealand miniseries, which has been compared with the TV series “Twin Peaks” and “The Killing.” But this is much more than another noir small-town mystery. The top notch cast, locations and cinematography propel Campion’s unique vision and take the viewer deep into art-house territory. Not rated. Running Time: 5:50. Suggested retail price: $39.99.
