SACO — The University of Maine Singers, 72 voices strong, will perform at First Parish Congregational Church at 12 Beach St. in Saco on Wednesday, March 12 for a concert at 7 p.m. The University Singers will be joined by the Thornton Academy Chamber Singers under the direction of Catherine Murray. Thornton students will sing two pieces to open the program and the public is invited to attend. There is no admission charge, but donations will be accepted.

The University of Maine Singers is a select choir whose members come from all disciplines across campus. Nearly half of its members are from areas outside of music. The University Singers perform multiple concerts on campus throughout the academic year, tour New England for one week each spring, and perform abroad every four years. TA has a strong connection with the University Singers, as there are several TA alumni currently singing with the group.

Murray is a UMO alumnus and served as the assistant conductor for the University Singers under the direction of long-time director Dr Dennis Cox.

“This is an exciting concert for the TA Chamber Singers,” she said in a recent statement about the show. “Some of our current singers plan to attend the University of Maine and will be auditioning for the group next year.”

This will be the last tour for Cox, who is retiring after many years at UMO. The performance will also include an appearance by the Maine Steiners, an all-male a capella group, and Renaissance, an all-female a capella group.
