BUXTON – The spring foaling season is well under way at Hearts & Horses Farm, 63 Justin Merrill Road, in Buxton with two foals and two more expected soon.

“People are welcome to come out and visit and bring a picnic,” Stephanie Keene, farm owner, said this week.

At the farm, a mare named Laughlin is nursing a 3-week old foal, Talulla Bell, and another mare, Nenagh, has a month-old foal Neilina. The foals and their mothers, who originally came from Ireland, are from the Gypsy Vanner breed that was developed in the British Isles. The Buxton foals’ sire, imported from England, is also at Hearts & Horses Farm.

Keene said Neilina means champion in Gaelic, and Talulla is Gaelic for prosperous lady.

Hearts & Horses is hosting a Kentucky Derby party beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at The Asylum, 121 Center St., Portland, to benefit the farm’s therapeutic riding center. The event includes watching the derby, a country-style buffet, DJ and dancing, and live and silent auctions. Tickets are $20 per person. For more information, call the farm at 929-4700 or visit heartsnhorses.org.
