I am writing on behalf of Paul Main, candidate for York County sheriff. I have known Main since he first went to work for me when I served as the elected York County sheriff in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. He was a highly dedicated, motivated and committed deputy sheriff, a man of great integrity.

Main served in leadership roles for my administration at the sheriff’s office. He was the commander of the Tactical Search Team for the office. He was certified by a specialized training program by the U.S. Air Force and Coast Guard in Tactical Search and Rescue. Main brought back this highly skilled training to Maine, where he introduced it to the Maine Warden Service and Penobscot Nation. These early beginnings evolved search and rescue to what it is today in the State of Maine.

Main also served in the position of the commander of the Reserve Deputy Sheriff’s Division, where he was instrumental in helping teach and train countless men and women as they entered the criminal justice profession. He served as the sheriff’s department firearms instructor and armorer. He served as an instructor at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy, and was one of the best detectives who served the sheriff’s office and had an outstanding record of solving crimes.

He provided administrative support in helping write policies and procedures as well as advocating for the contract deputy sheriff program. He was a key member of my team in advocating for stronger working relations with the Maine State Police, local and federal law enforcement agencies.

Main got to know just about everyone in his patrol areas and as a detective in rural York County towns. He took great pride in reaching out to the elderly folks and citizens who he knew needed different types of support services. I’ll always remember the Ice Storm of 1998 and Main driving around York County, going door to door to stop in and check on elderly folks to make sure they were OK. He had to use his chain saw to cut his way into many a home.

Main is the consummate professional. His successes in life didn’t evolve just around law enforcement and corrections. He had a career as a musician, performing around the country. He ran his own music recording company, became a registered Maine Guide, a published author and true sportsman. Main has the diverse background, knowledge, skills, experience and leadership to be an outstanding York County sheriff.

I am proud to call him my friend and urge York County citizens to support him.

Wes Phinney, Waterboro, former York County sheriff
