SACO — Chris Tinsman had three hits and drove in three runs for ninth-seeded Cheverus, which totaled seven runs over the final four innings to rally past eighth-ranked Thornton Academy for a 9-7 victory in a Western Class A baseball prelim Tuesday.

Drew Gelinas hit a two-run single during a six-run third inning that gave Thornton (8-8-1) a 6-2 lead, and finished with four hits.

The Stags (9-8) got two runs back in the fourth and took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth.

Mitchell Powers, who had three hits and drove in two runs for the Stags, allowed one run on three hits and struck out four over the final four innings.

WELLS 8, FREEPORT 3: Cody Cousins sparked a four-run fifth inning with a single that broke a 3-3 tie, and finished with three hits to lead the eighth-seeded Warriors (10-7) over the ninth-ranked Falcons (7-10) in a Western Class B prelim at Wells.

Nick Cousins added a sacrifice fly in the fifth for Wells, and Charlie Bell closed the inning with a two-run single.

Bennie McMinis of the Warriors struck out 11, walked three and didn’t allow an earned run in a three-hitter.

Freeport opened the scoring with two runs in the second, including an RBI single by Nathan Cyr. Wells tied it in the bottom of the inning.

WINTHROP 9, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 0: Dakota Carter drove in three runs to lead sixth-ranked Winthrop (11-6) over 11th-seeded Old Orchard Beach (6-11) in a Western Class C prelim at Winthrop.

Carter knocked in Winthrop’s first two runs with a double to left field in the second inning.

Ben Allen pitched a six-hit shutout with five strikeouts and no walks.

Kendal Tatsak of Old Orchard struck out five, walked one and surrendered 14 hits.

WESTBROOK 6, KENNEBUNK 4: Blake Fillmore hit a two-run double, then scored on a throwing error on the play as the 10th-seeded Blue Blazes (10-7) scored five runs with two outs in the fifth inning to down the seventh-seeded Rams (10-7) in a Western Class A prelim at Kennebunk.

D.J. Henrickson and Patrick Weimer added RBI singles in the five-run fifth, and Fillmore finished with three hits in Westbrook’s 12-hit offense.

Kennebunk, which took a 2-1 lead in the second, got two hits apiece from Robert Burns, Nick Emmons, Eric Aiken and Benjamin Lary.

SCARBOROUGH 5, SANFORD 0: Matt Hartl gave up four hits over five shutout innings and added a run-scoring single during a four-run first inning to lead the fifth-seeded Red Storm (10-6-1) past the 12th-ranked Spartans (6-11) in a Western Class A prelim at Scarborough.

Hartl and Nick Lorello finished with two hits apiece, and Austin Pemberton added a two-run single in the first for Scarborough.

Jimmy Parks had a pair of hits for Sanford.

HALL-DALE 13, TRAIP ACADEMY 3: After a slow start, the seventh-seeded Bulldogs (10-7) totaled 15 of their 17 hits over the final three innings to eliminate the 10th-ranked Rangers (7-10) in a six-inning Western Class C prelim at Farmingdale.

Hall-Dale will face second-seeded Dirigo in the quarterfinal round Thursday at Dixfield.

LACROSSE

MT. ARARAT 8, CONY 5: In Topsham, the fourth-seeded Eagles (9-4) won the rubber match between the teams, defeating fifth-ranked Cony (8-4) in an Eastern Class A quarterfinal.

Jon Saban led Cony with two goals, and Austin Davis added a goal and two assists, Bronson Kieltyka and Joh Bennett a goal apiece and Alex Stilphen an assist.

Isaac Gingras made nine saves for Cony.

Mt. Ararat will play at top-ranked Brunswick in the semifinals.
