Sanford Mainers improve to 15-8 with 3-0 victory over Valley Blue Sox

Steve Berman hit an RBI single in the first inning and added an RBI double in the fifth to lead the Sanford Mainers to a 3-0 win over the Valley Blue Sox in an NECBL game Tuesday night at Goodall Park in Sanford.

Robert Ruse scattered five hits and struck out four batters over six scoreless innings to earn the win for the Mainers (15-8), while Nick Lovullo had a pair of hits and scored one run.

FCBL: Nick Nunziato hit a two-run homer in the seventh and Dylan Harris brought home two more with a homer in the eighth to lead the Worcester Bravehearts to a 6-0 win over the Raging Tide at Old Orchard Beach.

Worcester is now 18-9; the Raging Tide is 9-19.

Raging Tide starter Evan Brisentine went seven innings, allowing three runs with nine strikeouts.

CYCLING

TOUR DE FRANCE: Defending champion Chris Froome scuffed his left knee and elbow and injured his wrist during Stage 4, while Astana team leader Vincenzo Nibali of Italy kept the yellow jersey in what he called a “crazy race” – a 101-mile ride along the Belgian border. Froome and two-time champ Alberto Contador are among 20 riders trailing Nibali by two seconds.

Marcel Kittel got his third stage victory, winning by a half-wheel length at the end of the ride from Le Touquet-Paris Plage to Lille Metropole, France.

TENNIS

HALL OF FAME TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS: Top-seeded John Isner advanced at Newport, Rhode Island with a 6-3, 7-6 (6) win over Wayne Odesnik. He is the highest-ranked American at No. 12 this week.

Defending champion Nicolas Mahut of France, the No. 4 seed, defeated Facundo Arguello of Argentina, 7-6 (1), 6-4.

SWEDISH OPEN: Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay won for just the fourth time this year when he ousted sixth-seeded Jeremy Chardy of France 6-2, 6-2 in under an hour in the first round at Bastad.

GASTEIN LADIES: Sara Errani made her transition from grass to clay with a straight-sets win over Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic at Bad Gastein, Austria, just three days after winning the doubles title at Wimbledon with fellow Italian Roberta Vinci.

HOCKEY

NHL: The Columbus Blue Jackets re-signed center Sean Collins to a one-year, two-way (NHL/AHL) contract for the 2014-15 season.

Collins, 24, appeared in six games with the Blue Jackets last season, with one assist.

The San Jose Sharks re-signed restricted free agent James Sheppard to a one-year contract.
