He attended the Little Red Schoolhouse in Farmington and graduated from Farmington High School in 1947. He received his bachelor’s degree from University of Maine at Orono. Stan was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He also received master’s degrees from Michigan State and Syracuse University. Upon graduation, he was a researcher at Lederle Lab Division of American Cyanminde, New York. Then he went on to teach high school chemistry and physics and operated his family’s dairy farm in Farmington. He was a Franklin County Soil Conservation director and member of the Franklin County Farm Bureau. After retiring from farming, Stan and Margaret moved to New Harbor and wintered in Spring Hill, Fla.
Stan enjoyed gardening, playing his clarinet, tinkering and being with family and friends. He was an active member and deacon of the United Baptist church in Topsham.
He was predeceased by his parents and brother Earl.
Stan is survived by his wife of 57 years Margaret of Topsham, son Timothy and his wife Melissa of Topsham, daughter Laura Jo of Raymond, son Jonathan and his wife Jennifer of Brooklin, and grandchildren Kayte and Samuel Morris, Kristen Ellsworth and William Wing, Sibyl Cunningham, Nolan Ellsworth, Isobel Cunningham, Walker Ellsworth and Jackie Ellsworth.
A celebration of life service will be held Monday, July 28 at 11 a.m. at the United Baptist Church in Topsham. Memorial donations may be made to the Little Red Schoolhouse Museum. Make gifts payable to Red Schoolhouse Museum/Susan M. Small Chairperson, at 10 Bellaire Road, South Portland, ME 04106. Burial will be held at the Riverside Cemetery, Farmington, at a later date.
