Portland routed Franklin County, Vermont, 16-5 in its first game in the 13-year-old New England Regionals at Westfield, Connecticut.

Ben Sawyer was 3 for 3 and Keller Nicolai went 2 for 2 for the Maine champs.

JUNIOR LEGION: Griffin Kelley struck out five while pitching host South Portland to a 10-1 victory over A.T. Hutchins in the opener of a three-game quarterfinal series at Wainwright Sports Complex.

Ben Conti and Drew Abramson led the South Portland offense with two hits and three runs scored apiece. Bayley Welsh added two RBI.

 Tim Barnard hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning and Wells rallied for a 4-3 win over visiting Standish in their series opener.

Cody Cousins pitched a five-hitter for the win.

Roderick Maynard, Zack Haas and Cam Robinson each hit a double for Standish.

FCBL: Graham McIntire singled home Kyle Mendenhall in the eighth inning, and Rahiem Cooper scored on Mekae Hyde’s bases-loaded walk as the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (14-28) rallied for a 7-6 win over the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (22-20) at Old Orchard Beach.

Dylan Morrow preserved the victory with a perfect ninth.

NECBL: Three Valley pitchers combined on a three-hitter to lead the Blue Sox (13-23) to a 4-0 win over the Sanford Mainers (20-14) at Sanford.

Christian Lavoie took the loss, allowing a run on six hits and striking out six in seven innings.


MLS: Ethan Finlay scored in the 84th minute and the Columbus Crew won 2-1 at New England to extend the Revolution’s losing streak to eight.

Federico Higuain opened the scoring for the Crew in the 43rd minute. A.J. Soares tied it off a corner kick from Kelyn Rowe in the 50th.

• Substitute Jacob Peterson scored in the 80th minute to help 10-man Sporting Kansas City beat host Toronto FC 2-1.
