HOUSTON — A Houston man who traveled to Maine and took sexually explicit images of a 14-year-old girl he met online must serve 25 years in federal prison.

Daniel M. Layne was sentenced Thursday in Houston. The 34-year-old Texan in February pleaded guilty to production of child pornography.

Prosecutors say Layne used the Internet to communicate with underage girls and discuss having sex with them.

The investigation began last year in Maine when a mother discovered a motel key card in her daughter’s pants pocket and sexually graphic messages on her cellphone.

Layne’s home was searched last September. Authorities seized computers, a table and cellphones with images of the girl. Layne was arrested in October.

Further details on the girl weren’t released.
