FALMOUTH — As expected last week, The Maine Coast Heritage Trust on Friday, Aug. 15, officially purchased the northeast half of Clapboard Island from Clapboard Island East LLC.
The 15 acres will be open as a public preserve.
More than 175 individuals and several organizations supported the $1.4 million acquisition, including lead gifts from the town of Falmouth, the Land for Maine’s Future Program, and The Pew Charitable Trusts.
The island came on the market in 2011. MCHT had had until Aug. 15 to raise the funds before the land would have gone back on the open market.
A cottage and two acres on the island will also be sold to one of the island’s previous owners, with proceeds going toward the public project.
MCHT will be putting signs on the island to mark what land is public and what land is private.
