The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a single-car accident that claimed the life of a 19-year-old man on a remote country road in Lincoln late Saturday night.

WCSH-TV reported that police found the body of Nicholas Haynes of Lincoln near the wreckage of his smoldering car, which slammed into a granite wall and burst into flames around 9:30 p.m.

Haynes was a recent graduate of Mattanawock Academy in Lincoln, where he played varsity basketball.

According to the Portland television station, an officer tried to pull Haynes over after Haynes sped past him with a taillight and headlight out. The officer was unable to catch up with Haynes on the Bagley Mountain Road. About an hour later, Haynes’ mother called police to say her son was missing.

Officers discovered the wreck around 11:20 p.m. Saturday.
