A Portland man who was driving a motorized scooter was taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center after he was struck by a pickup truck Monday evening.
Lt. Gary Hutcheson said 32-year-old Michael Proctor was driving the scooter in the bicycle travel lane as he approached the intersection of Forest Avenue and Walton Street around 5 p.m.
At the time, traffic in both directions had come to a stop and the intersection was clear for the driver of a GMC Sierra pickup truck to turn from Forest Avenue onto Walton Street.
Christian Viollette, 42, of Portland, struck Proctor with his truck after Proctor lost control of his scooter and fell into his path.
Hutcheson described Proctor’s injuries as serious but not life-threatening.
Viollette was not cited by police.
Portland police shut down the outbound lane of Forest Avenue for about 30 minutes. Hutcheson said rush-hour traffic was diverted and traffic flowed smoothy during the road closure.
