I am very concerned to read that Emily Chaleff, executive director of the Jewish Community Alliance, attempts to defend the military actions of the state of Israel against Gaza (“Another View: Israel critics rely on suspect data on Palestinian deaths,” Aug. 24) and criticizes the views of Jewish Mainers who oppose what Israel is doing (“Maine Voices: Jewish Mainers oppose U.S.-funded oppression of Palestinians by Israel,” Aug. 21).

Ms. Chaleff claims that reports of civilian casualties in Gaza have been repudiated and are highly suspect.

However, the United Nations and almost all humanitarian organizations decry what Israel is doing and point out that approximately 75 percent of the 2,100 deaths in Gaza are civilian men, women and children. As of this writing, only five civilian casualties have been reported by Israel.

I believe that Ms. Chaleff’s attempts to nullify the facts and denounce those Jews who disagree with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions are shameful.
