The driver of a pickup truck died in a single-car crash on South Road in Chebeague Island Monday afternoon after striking a utility pole.

The driver, who was the only person in the 1998 Ford Ranger truck, has not been identified pending notification of the family. The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 4:24 p.m. Monday.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and Chebeague Island Fire/EMS responded to the accident. The truck left the roadway and struck the pole, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

The crash is under investigation. Early indications are that speed was a factor in the crash.
