Thank you to Michael Cuzzi for his well-written, comprehensive column in last Sunday’s Insight section criticizing the decision of this newspaper’s editorial board to not endorse any candidate in the upcoming election (“Newspapers abandon essential role when they abandon endorsements,” Sept. 7).

I, too, was concerned, and although the rationale for the decision seemed valid, I was troubled by the information void that it creates. Politics is always serious business, but politics in Maine at this point in time is especially so.

One would hope that we voters all do our homework by researching issues, listening to debates, holding discussions among ourselves and being as informed as we can be. However, we also look to editorials for their educated opinions, not to tell us what to think but to reinforce (or not) our own conclusions.

Concerning the possible conflict involving U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-1st District, and her husband, S. Donald Sussman, majority share owner of the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, Mr. Cuzzi’s suggestion to abstain from endorsing that office is a good one. I expect the candidates would agree.

While I realize the implications involved in reversing an absolute statement or decision, I would urge the editorial board to sit down together and rethink this one. Your readers, as well as the candidates running for office, deserve no less.
