ORONO (AP) — The University of Maine Climate Change Institute is hosting a conference next month about preparing for extreme weather events.

The Climate Change Adaptation and Sustainability Conference will take place Oct. 23 at the Wells Conference Center at the university’s main campus in Orono. University officials say the event is for business people, farmers, community planners and other interested residents and will cover subjects such as the spread of ticks and rising sea levels.

Assistant Professor Sean Birkel will show participants how to use online tools that provide climate and weather models as well as pollution and health information.
