Wouldn’t it be great to have our old Deering Oaks back again?

Our magnificent city park used to be a contiguous green expanse in the center of Portland before someone’s idea carved it in two for the sake of progress. Families, such as my own, would visit the park to picnic, take in a ballgame, watch our children in the playground, admire the flower gardens or just walk around this beautiful area in the heart of the city.

To have this happen, we would have two options: Dig up this part of State Street and grass the area back in, or build a small pedestrian bridge that would go over the road to allow people to cross from one part of the park to the other.

The first alternative would probably not meet the city’s budget constraints, whereas the latter may be doable. I’m not sure how much it would cost, but it may be worth getting an estimate. This would reunite the two beautiful parts of the park and also provide a safer way to cross the road.
