CHESTER (AP) — State police have identified the man who was shot and killed by troopers during a standoff in Chester, Maine.

The incident started Saturday morning when residents reported a man walking along Route 116 in Chester carrying a knife.

State police negotiators and members of the tactical team were called to the scene. Authorities say 34-year-old Shad Gerken of Woodville cut a game warden, Sgt. Ronald Dunham, with the knife, but the injury wasn’t serious.

The standoff ended shortly before 6 p.m. when Gerken was shot and killed. Three members of the tactical team have been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure while a police involved shooting is investigated. They are Sgt. Nicholas Grass, Sgt. Donald Shead and Det. Gregory Mitchell.
