Bowdoin women prevail over USM in soccer

Kiersten Turner and Jamie Hofstetter each had a goal and an assist Tuesday as Bowdoin shut out the University of Southern Maine 3-0 in a non-conference women’s soccer game in Gorham.

Turner’s goal was unassisted in the fifth minute, Amanda Kinneston and Turner assisted on Jamie Hofstetter’s goal in the 13th, and Julia Bottone scored in the 82nd on a through ball from Hofstetter.

Rachel Stout and Bridget McCarthy combined for two saves for Bowdoin (7-1). Marissa Temple stopped 16 of the 19 shots she faced for the Huskies (2-8-1).

Maddie Tight scored in the 27th minute and visiting Colby (3-4-1) held on for a 1-0 victory over UMaine-Farmington (2-6).

FIELD HOCKEY: Kelsi McDougle scored 6:42 into overtime to lead Babson past the University of New England 2-1 in Biddeford.

Michaela Demers scored 4:52 into overtime to lift Southern Maine (5-5, 2-2 Little East) to a 2-1 win over Salem State (1-8, 0-4) in Salem, Massachusetts.

BASKETBALL

WOMEN’S WORLDS: Nneka Ogwumike scored 18 points to lead the U.S. women’s national team to a 119-44 rout of Angola to close out preliminary play in Istanbul.

The U.S. (3-0) will next play Friday in the quarterfinals against France or Brazil.

NBA: Miami center Justin Hamilton is expected to be sidelined for about a month after undergoing a procedure to repair a common abnormal heart rhythm.

SOCCER

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Paris Saint-Germain, which has endured a subdued start to its French title defense, beat Barcelona, the Spanish league leaders, 3-2 in Group F.

Also, Francesco Totti, 38, became the oldest scorer in the competition’s 22-year history as Roma drew 1-1 at Manchester City. The previous record-holder, Ryan Giggs, was 37 when he scored his last European goal in 2011 for Manchester United.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrara broke a rib Saturday in the 2-1 home victory against West Ham.

LUGE

USA TEAM: Lubomir Mick, a former Slovakian coach, was hired as an assistant on USA Luge’s staff for this season.

DOG SHOW

WESTMINSTER SHOW: A Hungarian hunting dog and a cheerful breed known as the “royal dog of Madagascar” will join the pack next year.

A wire-haired visla and a coton de tulear were on hand at Madison Square Garden as kennel club leaders looked ahead to the February show.

FIGURE SKATING

CHAN STEPS BACK: Patrick Chan, a three-time world champion, is taking a break from competitive skating but plans to return next season.

Chan, 23, still intends to take part in invitational and exhibition programs over the coming months.

PREP SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Caroline Hernon scored three goals and Sam Montagano recorded her fourth shutout of the season to lead Berwick Academy (5-2) to an 8-0 victory against Hyde in Bath.

Kelly Burke added a pair of goals and Siobhan McDermott collected two assists.

BOYS’ SOCCER: Abdibaari Hersi scored his second goal of the game 15 minutes into the second half to lift Hyde to a 2-1 win over Berwick Academy (1-6-1) at Bath.
