LOVELL — A Lovell couple is homeless this week after a fire that officials say was caused by an overheated electrical cord or appliance destroyed their residence on Main Street.

Lovell Fire Chief Tommie C. McKenzie said the couple had just left their two-bedroom home at 441 Main St. when a passerby reported flames and smoke coming from the wood-frame house.

Crews from Lovell, Stoneham, Sweden and Fryeburg arrived to find the home fully engulfed by fire.

The American Red Cross has found temporary housing for the occupants of the home, Denise Williamson and Dan Patton, according to McKenzie. But one of their three cats was still missing Thursday.

Traffic on Main Street had to be restricted to one lane during the fire, which was reported around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. It took crews about 90 minutes to bring the fire under control.
