Kargul celebrates 25 years at USM
With the charge of building a piano program, the School of Music at the University of Southern Maine in 1989 hired pianist Laura Kargul.
Now 25 years later, Kargul will celebrate her teaching career and the legacy of the university’s piano program with a concert of Schubert, Brahms
and Liszt. The concert is set for 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, in Corthell Concert Hall, on the university Gorham campus.
The concert is sponsored by Dr. Dahlia Lynn, USM associate provost for undergraduate education, and her husband, Arthur L. Handman.
“Aside from her passion for great music, and her ability to infuse that passion into her extraordinary teaching,” Lynn said about Kargul in a statement, “her ability to engage an audience by explaining in very understandable, non-technical terms what makes each piece special, its historical context, and how she relates to it has opened up a world of musical appreciation to audiences across the state of Maine.”

Gorham library lands $150G grant
Pamela Turner, director of Baxter Memorial Library, on Wednesday announced that the library has been selected to receive a $150,000 grant by the Next Generation Foundation.
Turner said the grant is for the Baxter Memorial Library Centennial Endowment Fund.
“With this generous grant to the Centennial Endowment Fund, the Next Generation Foundation celebrates the memory of Avis Cloudman, the daughter of Horace and Charlotte (Lord) Cloudman of Gorham,” Turner said.
Town Manager David Cole said on Wednesday in an email to town officials that Turner “deserves most of the credit for finding this opportunity and for her determined pursuit of this application. We would also like to thank the Next Generation Foundation for the grant.”
Turner said the Gorham Town Council established the endowment fund in 2008 to honor the100th anniversary of the library.
“Interest from this endowment is used to purchased books and other items for the library’s collections,” Turner said.
Cancer group to meet
The Gorham Cancer Prayer and Support Group will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Cressey Road United Methodist Church, Cressey Road, Gorham. The group meets monthly on the first Tuesday.
