I support Democrat Cathy Breen for the District 25 Maine Senate seat because she is committed to resolving a key problem facing our jails and prisons today: the high number of inmates who are mentally ill.

As an example, in the Cumberland County Jail about 80 percent of our 450 prisoners are addicted to a substance or have co-occurring mental illness.

Breen knows that warehousing the mentally ill in prisons is expensive and ineffective and does not help the individual inmate or make the streets safer.

She has made it clear that improving mental health services in Maine is a high priority for her. Breen’s experience on two boards, the Community Counseling Center and Spurwink Services, as well as her six years on the Falmouth Town Council, gives her the knowledge and credibility to get something done in Augusta.
