My wife and I attended a performance of “Avenue Q” at the Lyric Music Theater in South Portland on Oct. 2. Not the usual local theater fare, but kudos to the cast and crew for their performances and to the theater for offering us something quite unique.

Unfortunately, while carrying themselves very well artistically, they couldn’t resist taking a partisan cheap shot at the governor.

They inserted the governor’s name in one of the musical numbers such that the negative implication was obvious.

While I respect the right to have and express opinions, it could be argued that sponsors and paying patrons have a right to expect that a paid evening of entertainment, regardless of the satirical and political content of the show itself, will be free of ad libs to the script targeted at specific individuals.

We all lived through it, as it was a blip on the radar, but how sad that the director and board of the theater couldn’t refrain from the impulse to single out someone they don’t approve of in an inappropriate venue to unsuspecting paying patrons. A misguided and mean-spirited, not to mention tacky, choice.
