A Peru man has been arrested by Maine State Police and charged with murder in the death of his 57-year-old mother-in-law.

Paul Orchard, 33, was taken into custody Sunday night as he was being discharged from Rumford Hospital, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Orchard had to be hospitalized after the body of his mother-in-law, 57-year-old Paula Nuttall, was discovered Saturday morning in the kitchen of a home on Main Street in Peru. Nuttall lived in the house with four other family members, including Orchard.

Additional information on Nuttall’s death and the reason Orchard had to be hospitalized are expected to be released once Orchard appears in Oxford County Superior Court on Tuesday.

He was being held Sunday night without bail at the Oxford County Jail in South Paris.
