KITTERY — A man who police initially thought might have jumped off the Piscataqua River Bridge was taken into custody Tuesday night after authorities found him climbing on the bridge’s superstructure.

At 7:48 p.m., someone called the New Hampshire State Police dispatch center to report that a man was standing on the Interstate 95 bridge – a six-lane structure that carries traffic between Kittery and Portsmouth. The bridge is about 135 feet above the water

Fearing the man had jumped off the bridge, Maine and New Hampshire state police, the Coast Guard, and several local police and fire agencies responded, but were unable to find him.

Paul Conner, a spokesman for the Coast Guard station in South Portland, said Maine State Police took the man into custody around 9:15 p.m.

“He never jumped,” Conner said. “He was pretty high up in the bridge superstructure, looking down on everyone.”

A state police dispatcher confirmed that the man was being questioned by a trooper Tuesday night but was not certain whether the man was going to be charged.
