BANGOR (AP) — A nurse who worked for a company contracted to provide health care to inmates at a Maine prison says in a lawsuit she was a victim of racial discrimination.
Shana Cannell, who is black, was fired in 2010 after filing a complaint about ongoing racial harassment at the Maine State Prison in Warren. The suit filed in U.S. District Court in Bangor seeks back pay, damages and reinstatement.
The Portland Press Herald reports the lawsuit names as defendants Corizon LLC, and some employees. Cannell’s lawyer says he expects prison officials will be added.
The suit alleges Cannell was subject to racial epithets after it was rumored she was dating a white prison guard.
Corizon said in a statement it doesn’t comment on pending litigation but does not tolerate discrimination and harassment.
