While it was certainly windy throughout southern Maine overnight, it was a bigger deal to our south. Over southern New England the nor’easter raged overnight with heavy rain, wind, thunder and lightning. The power went out in multiple communities and is still out for hundreds of people, mostly around Boston. Flooding has been an issue on many roads. The major band of rain continues to shift further north and west and will impact much of southern Maine for the rest of the morning.

As I write this there are flood advisories and warnings for many communities around southern Maine. There is also a storm warning along the coast where winds could gust over 55 miles per hour. If you are driving and do come upon a road that is flooded, don’t drive through. No one wants to be the person the next YouTube video showing you on the top of your car.

There can be scattered power outages from the storm and it will be a good idea to have flashlights and other necessities on hand in case you lose power and it goes into the night. Why not make dinner a little early if you can?

Obviously, we aren’t going to see sunshine today and it’s also likely we see cloudy skies much of tomorrow. The heaviest rain should taper later this afternoon as the heaviest bands move north. The radar projection below is for around 2PM today. At that time the rain will have tapered to showers in Portland, but be torrential in the Augusta, Waterville region. This band will move further north thereafter bringing heavy rain to Bangor and points east.

The biggest issue from this nor’easter is going to be road and basement flooding. This isn’t the type of storm that will cause major or even moderate coastal flooding and while some trees will fall or suffer some damage, most of us are just going to have to rake a bunch of wet leaves later this weekend and pick up some broken branches off the lawn.

Check your basements and be sure the window wells are not clogged with leaves. A window well that fills with water can end up pouring into the little hopper window and into your house.

Friday A Bit Better
Showers remain in the forecast tomorrow, mostly in the morning, and clouds will be abundant. Highs will be in the 50s. Slow moving systems like this one often bring very variable conditions on the final day of their influence. The sun could come out briefly, but showers can also pop-up in the still unstable pattern.

Weekend Looking Great
Sunshine returns in earnest Saturday and Sunday. A weak system might bring a period of showers late Saturday night, but will be bookended by nice weather. Highs over the weekend reach 60F on Saturday and get close again on Sunday. A warming trend follows for Monday and 70F isn’t out of the question by the middle of next week!
