An armed man was shot and wounded by Lewiston police officers Friday night in Kennedy Park, authorities said. He was expected to survive.

Albert Crowley, 21, was shot after police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at 8:05 p.m. at 1 Knox St., near Kennedy Park in downtown Lewiston. A female caller at that address told police Crowley had assaulted her, had left the apartment and might be armed with a gun, according to a press release issued late Friday night by Police Chief Michael Bussiere.

Bussiere said officers located the suspect near the intersection of Knox and Spruce streets.

He “failed to heed the verbal commands of the officers and brandished a firearm,” Bussiere said in the press release. “During the confrontation he was shot by the officers.”

Lt. Michael McGonagle said Crowley was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and that his wounds aren’t considered life-threatening.

The officers involved were identified as Cpl. Michael Dumond, Officer Brian Bourgoin and Officer Zachary Provost. As is standard procedure, they were placed on administrative leave, and the Maine Attorney General’s Office is investigating.

It was the 10th officer-involved shooting in Maine this year.
