We were surprised – no, make that shocked – to read that the Portland Press Herald is in favor of keeping the three ways of killing bears in Maine: putting out bait, setting traps and siccing dogs on them (“Our View: Bear-baiting case not made: We say ‘no’ on Question 1,” Oct. 19).
No other state does that. Only Maine. We and our four kids and their families are embarrassed that Maine uses all these cruel and pathetic methods to kill our bears.
What is it about Maine’s bears that justifies this? In all the TV ads with state biologists in them, they never answer that question. That’s why we’re voting “yes” on Question 1.
