It’s Halloween evening and this means a lot of kids are out walking around. Do be extra careful, as with the thick clouds and lack of moonlight it’s going to be a rather dark evening. Temperatures will be mostly in the upper 40s and there won’t any rain so the kids can go out in just their costumes.

The chart below shows temperature, wind, and the chance of precipitation through Sunday. Notice skies are also going to remain cloudy throughout most of this period, finally starting to clear after mid-afternoon Sunday.

A lot of changes take place this weekend both in the weather and in our clocks. Of course by now you’ve likely been reminded several times to set the clock back one hour before you go to sleep on Saturday. This gives us an extra hour of sleeping or staying out and having fun. The sunsets now move to before 5PM and will remain there until February 3rd 2015 when the sun will set at just after 5PM.

If you are a morning person the sun will rise before 6:30 for the next week and not move until after 7AM until early December.

Another Nor’easter
A large an intense storm is going to move off the coast tomorrow and then into the Canadian Maritimes late Sunday. This storm will become quite intense and while too far away to bring any major snow on the backend; it will bring a lot of wind.

This storm system is actually coming in two pieces, but piece number two will be too far away to give southern and Sunday Maine any snow. It will merge with the first storm over the Maritimes Sunday and this is why eastern areas can see snow.

How Windy?
Winds could gust as high as 45 mph across parts of the coast especially east of Rockland. Wind speeds like this can bring down some larger tree limbs and therefore power outages are a risk. In Portland and surrounding towns the winds will gust over 35 miles per hour and the leaves will be blowing around a lot. The strongest winds come Saturday night and the first half of Sunday.

Rainfall
Rain overspreads the area on Saturday afternoon. It will be dry around sunrise, but by noon it should be raining steadily south of Portland and spreading north. Rainfall will be heaviest across eastern areas will less rain the further west you live. In Portland we can expect half an inch to a full inch of rain, perhaps a bit more or less as the storm track changes a bit over the next 24 hours. Further east there will be more in the way of rain as they are closer to the storm track.

Snow or No Snow?
Sunday morning, early, as the storm pulls to our east the rain may end as a period of snow in the higher elevations and areas east of Bangor. There is a Winter Storm Watch posted for the eastern part of Maine for the chance of heavy snow during the second part of this storm.

There could even be a slushy coating in some of the higher terrian. I also expect August and Bangor to see at least a few flakes of snow before it ends. The further north and east you are Sunday morning the better chance you have of seeing your first flakes of the fall/winter season. Greater Portland could see a few wet flakes at the end of the storm, but it’s less likely.

Football Weather
Down in Foxborough the weather on Sunday looks windy with a drying trend. Skies will partially clear and it will continue to be cold. Highs on Sunday only reach the mid-40s, but will fall to the upper 30s after the sunsets. By the 4th quarter of the Patriots game it will likely be about 38F with wind chills in the upper 20s.

Milder
It remains dry to start the new workweek with a warming trend. Highs get back into the 50s and even near 60F is possible in the middle of next week. Happy Halloween and be safe.
