Eliot Cutler was at heart a Democrat. He should have run as one and tested his message against other Democrats.
Had he won the nomination, he now would be Gov.-elect Cutler. Instead, he took the easier route for getting on the ballot by running as an independent.
His unwillingness to follow conventional rules, which appealed to naive supporters, now means, for instance, that 77,000 Mainers will not be covered by Medicaid, something that would have happened with the stroke of a pen were a Democrat being sworn into office in January.
