Snow is falling across many areas pre-sunrise, but is already ending west the Maine Turnpike and will over in the Portland area by 9AM. Generally look for up to 3 inches of snow in the higher elevations with perhaps a bit more east of Bangor.

Sunshine is going to be back during the afternoon and winds will also be brisk. I am expecting highs to reach upper 30s and there will be some melting. This is not permanaent winter snow cover. Although it is going to be very cold next week, I still believe there will be enough mild air in the second part of November so this snow will be gone. Ski areas should be able to make a lot of snow in the coming 7 to 10 days and build up some great bases.

It’s a cold night ahead with a hard freeze. You’ll notice any remaining leaves falling off the trees tomorrow morning as they will freeze tonight. Thus far this fall, while we have had some chilly weather, we have yet to have as hard a freeze as we will see tonight.

Saturday is bright and cold all day. There will be plenty of sunshine, but highs will only reach the upper 30s Winds will be light, so if your ground is dry enough you could rake some leaves.

Sunday brings slightly milder air on a southerly flow. This also means clouds are returning, so it may actually feel colder Sunday with the lack of sun and more wind. Another storm moves in late Sunday night and Monday.
It looks like there will be enough warm air around the region for the Monday event to be a cold rain. Some folks could see some wet snow mixed with the rain at the start, but it’s a wet not white event.

The rain linger into Monday evening and with the early darkness, the morning and evening commutes could be impacted by wet roads.

Sunshine returns for Tuesday and Wednesday, but it’s going to be cold. So far we haven’t really experienced any of the arctic air you’ve likely heard about across the Rocky Mountain area eastward to the Midwest. This will change next week when the flow of air becomes more direct from the north rather than from the west.

Temperatures will stay in the 30s Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and some towns in hillier terrain might not get out of the lower 30s on Wednesday.

A moderating trend should begin to take place about a week from now. If you are wondering if this is the start of winter and we are done with the mild days, the answer is it’s likely we do see some more mild weather ahead. The 10-15 day outlook of temperature shows a warm-up taking place into the Thanksgiving week.

These longer range forecasts are usually pretty good in trend forecasting. It will be interesting to see if they get this one right. I know I still have a lot of work to do outside and could use some milder days.
