A Boston-based wind power company that owns and operates several wind farms in Maine is being purchased by solar energy company SunEdison and its publicly traded subsidiary, TerraForm Power, in a deal estimated to be worth up to $2.4 billion.

SunEdison, based in Missouri, and TerraForm announced Monday that they have signed an agreement to purchase First Wind.

First Wind develops, owns and operates wind projects across the U.S., including five already operating in Maine and one under construction in Oakfield, in Aroostook County.

SunEdison officials said Monday that they are buying First Wind for $1.9 billion now and $510 million in payments if First Wind completes certain projects. Sun- Edison, which develops and operates solar power plants, said the deal will make it the world’s largest renewable energy development company.

“The acquisition of First Wind transforms both SunEdison and TerraForm Power into diversified renewable energy companies and will make SunEdison the leading renewable power plant developer in the world,” Ahmad Chatila, president and chief executive officer of SunEdison, said in a statement issued by the company on Monday.

The transaction is expected to close during the first quarter of 2015.

“This new strategic organization will allow us to join with SunEdison to develop and invest in new, long-term contracted, well-sited and well-run renewable energy projects that deliver clean energy to homes and businesses across the country and internationally,” said Paul Gaynor, First Wind’s chief executive officer.

The companies did not elaborate on the impact the acquisition will have in Maine.

According to First Wind’s website, its other Maine wind farms are Bull Hill in Hancock, Mars Hill Wind in Mars Hill, Stetson Wind I and Stetson Wind II near Danforth, and Rollins Wind near Lincoln.

First Wind is also developing and operating other renewable energy projects in the Northeast, several western states and Hawaii. In all, the projects have a combined transmission capacity of 1,300 megawatts – enough energy to provide power to more than 375,000 homes a year.
