PHIPPSBURG — Robert D. Spickler, 93, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at Togus Veterans Hospital in Augusta.

He was born Aug. 6, 1921, in Mt. Vernon, N.Y. He was the son of Richard and Vera (nee Marini) Spickler. He grew up in Mt. Vernon and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He took part in the Normandy Invasion and finished his duty in Europe.

He married his wife of nearly 70 years, Olive Saulle Spickler, in 1944. He started Crusader Hot Water Heater Co. in New York and later became a highly successful real estate developer on the coast of Maine.

He loved boating, fishing and the ocean, which eventually led him to move to the coast of Maine. He was a creative, multi-faceted and innovative person. He was a devoted husband and father.

He was predeceased by his wife, Olive Spickler; son, Robert D. Spickler Jr.; and by a brother, Harold Spickler.

He is survived by a son, Richard Spickler of Lake Worth, Fla.; daughters, Sharon Spickler of Dover, N.H., Lauren Spickler Carrolton of Phippsburg, and Veronica Leigh Morong of Stoneham, Mass.; a sister, Shirley Spickler Calcaterra of Bethel, Conn.; three grandsons; one granddaughter; and two great-granddaughters. A private burial will be held at Morningside Cemetery with military honors. A celebration of Robert’s life will be held in the summer of 2015.
