SACO — Margarita Zavala has resigned from the school board.
Zavala, in a brief email to Interim Superintendent of Schools Michael Pulsifer on Nov. 18, said she was resigning from her position. She gave no reason for her decision.
The board voted at Wednesday night’s meeting at Saco City Hall to accept the letter of resignation. Zavala was contacted by phone after the meeting, but declined to comment further on her decision.
Zavala served on the school board since being elected in December 2013. She was also elected to the Regional School Unit 23 board in November of 2013, serving on both boards concurrently, while the city transitioned out of the RSU.
Zavala’s resignation leaves a vacancy to be filled in Ward 2.
The school board also announced Wednesday night that it will soon begin advertising for a permanent superintendent.
The board re-appointed Kevin Lafortune as chairman and Beth Johnston as vice chairwoman.
