The Boston Red Sox are nearing a deal to send third baseman Will Middlebrooks to the San Diego Padres for catcher Ryan Hanigan, according to multiple media reports.

Middlebrooks hit 15 home runs and batted .288 as a rookie with the Red Sox in 2012, but his numbers and playing time dropped the past two seasons. He hit .191 in 2014, with two home runs and 19 RBI.

Hanigan was acquired by the Padres in a three-team trade earlier this week. He hit .218 in 84 games with Tampa Bay last season, after playing parts of seven seasons with Cincinnati.
