The finalists for the Frank J. Gaziano Memorial offensive and defensive linemen awards for 2014 have been announced.

Offensive line finalists are: Zach Davis of Windham, Jacob Doyon of Messalonskee and Benjamin Zuke of Thornton Academy.

Defensive line finalists are: Hunter Bowen of Windham, Zordan Holman of Cheverus and Seamus McKaig of Orono.

One linemen from each category will receive a $5,000 scholarship and a first-place trophy. The four runners-up will get $1,000 scholarships.

The winners will be announced at a luncheon on Jan. 24 at the Augusta Civic Center.

The scholarship and awards program for Maine high school linemen was created in 2010 in memory of Gaziano, founder of National Distributors in South Portland and a former college All-American and professional football player.

Quinton Porter, a former Portland High and Boston College quarterback, will be guest speaker at the luncheon.

High school coaches nominate candidates and a committee of coaches and former players reduces the nominees to semifinal and finalist lists.

SOCCER

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER: New York City FC acknowledged it misled fans by wrongly announcing the signing of Frank Lampard last year when he never had a playing contract for the expansion team.

After Lampard’s release from Chelsea, NYCFC announced in July that he had “signed a two-year contract which starts August 1st” and paraded him around Manhattan.

In fact, he’d only agreed to a “commitment” to play for NYCFC on a two-year contract from January 2015.
