WOOLWICH — Laurel Steuernagle of Woolwich, Maine, and longtime resident of Georgetown, Maine, died Jan. 8, 2015, after a long struggle with ovarian cancer. She was born in Lynn, MA, on Dec. 2, 1950, to Edwin R. and Gladys R. Ellis. She grew up in Saugus, MA.

She played bagpipes with the Bluebell Highlanders in Saugus and was a Past Worthy Advisor to the local chapter of International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. She graduated from Saugus High School and studied at the School of Fashion Design and Bryant and Stratton College in Boston.

In Massachusetts, she worked at Sears Roebuck doing display work and at Epicure Products in Newburyport manufacturing audiophile loudspeakers. She was married on April 28, 1976, to James “Starkey” Steuernagle. They lived in Dresden, Bath, Richmond, Georgetown and Woolwich, Maine.

A longtime resident of Georgetown, Laurel performed volunteer work at the Laura E. Richards Library and for the Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She was a reading tutor for Literacy Volunteers of Mid-Coast Maine. For several years, she served as Georgetown’s unofficial Flag Lady, putting up and taking down the American and Maine flags in front of Georgetown Central School every day. She was an avid crafter and gardener and maintained a continuousl y-evolving menagerie, including cats, dogs, rabbits, chickens and a cantankerous Nubian goat.

She leaves behind her husband of 38 years, a sister, Elaine Meuse of Saugus, MA, and a brother, Richard Ellis of Wakefield, MA.
