GORHAM — Ally Vanidestine and Lynn Kozlowski each scored twice, and the University of Southern Maine women’s hockey team surprised No. 10 Bowdoin with four third-period goals in a 6-3 victory Tuesday night – the Huskies’ first win in series history.

The Huskies (4-9-1) and Polar Bears (7-3-2) have met 22 times since the series began on Jan. 9, 1999.

Vanidestine scored shorthanded in the first period, then again at 7:33 of the third, just 27 seconds after Kozlowski’s power-play goal made it 3-1.

Kozlowski added a short-handed empty-netter with 2:07 left.

Marne Gallant, Rachel Kennedy and Maddie Baird scored for Bowdoin, which is ranked 10th in USCHO Division III poll.

COLBY 4, HOLY CROSS 3: Jess Thulin stopped 53 shots and Katie Tang scored the winning goal in the second period for the Mules (6-6) against the Crusaders (9-4-1) at Waterville.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UMASS-LOWELL 62, MAINE 59: Jahad Thomas made a pair of free throws with nine seconds left to preserve a narrow come-from-behind victory as UMass-Lowell edged Maine 62-59 Tuesday night.

Thomas scored 15 points with eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals in the victory – UMass-Lowell’s seventh decided by 10 points or fewer and its sixth second-half comeback. Chad Holley scored 14 and Tyler Livingston 13 for the River Hawks (9-8, 3-1 America East).

Thomas and Lance Crawford wrapped back-to-back baskets around a Maine miss to give UMass-Lowell a 52-51 lead with just under eight minutes to play. Maine threatened several times but did not regain the lead.

Zarko Valjarevic led the Black Bears (1-15, 0-4) with a season-high 23 points including seven 3-pointers, also a season best. Till Gloger added 14 points and Garet Beal 10.

Beal missed both ends of a two-shot foul with Maine trailing 60-59 with 12 seconds to play.

RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE 72, USM 57: Roosevelt Shider scored 23 points to lead the Anchormen (11-3, 3-1 Little East) over the Huskies (3-11, 0-4) at Gorham.

Jacob Littlefield scored 21 points and Zach Leal had 11 points and three assists for the Huskies.

BATES 60, UM-PRESQUE ISLE 47: Mike Boornazian scored 17 points as the Bobcats (11-2) beat the Owls (8-7) at Lewiston.

Jerome Darling scored 11 points and Malcolm Delpeche had nine points with 10 rebounds for Bates.

UNE 60, WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 58: Jean-Luc Parker scored 16 points and the Nor’easters (4-9, 2-2 Commonwealth Coast) held on to defeat the Golden Bears (3-10, 1-5) at Springfield, Massachusetts.

USM 56, RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE 49: Megan Pelletier scored 22 points as the Huskies (7-7, 3-1 Little East) downed the Anchormen (2-11, 1-3) at Gorham.

Ella Ramonas had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Huskies, who recovered from poor first-half shooting and held a three two-point leads in the final minutes before ending with 7-2 run.

UNE 65, WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 47: Alanna Vose scored 29 points, including eight 3-pointers, as the Nor’easters (9-2, 6-0 Commonwealth Coast) handled the Golden Bears (8-4, 3-3) at Springfield, Massachusetts.

Vose, who was ranked seventh in Division III for 3-pointers in games through Jan. 11, scored 18 of her points in the last 11 minutes.

Alicia Brown added 10 points with six rebounds for UNE.
