BOSTON — U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas wants to award the Congressional Gold Medal to an organization created by aircrew members who evaded capture by enemy forces during foreign wars.
The Massachusetts Democrat said the U.S. Air Forces Escape and Evasion Society, founded in 1964, also recognizes resistance organizations and foreign nationals who put their lives on the line to help hide U.S. troops.
The group has more than 600 members, including veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
Tsongas said there are six Massachusetts members of the group.
Congressional Gold Medals are intended to express the nation’s highest appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.
