Westbrook police officers say they arrested a man while he was burglarizing a car at about 2 a.m. on Thursday on Mechanic Street.

According to Capt. Michael Nugent, officers observed footprints in the fresh snow leading to parked cars in several driveways. On further investigating they located Franklin LeClair, 51, of Steep Falls, inside a parked vehicle. LeClair was arrested on charges of burglary to a motor vehicle, refusing to submit to arrest and unlawful possession of schedule Z drugs.

Officers recovered a number of suspected stolen items during the arrest and believe other area residents were also victimized. Anyone in the area of Mechanic and Green streets who finds that their vehicles were burglarized should call Westbrook police at 854-0644.

Nugent says everyone should lock their vehicles and not leave valuables in view. In the majority of car burglaries, the victims’ vehicles are left unlocked, he said.
