If the Portland Press Herald is going to present melting Arctic sea ice as largely an opportunity for “entrepreneurial engagement” that opens up more commercial possibilities for “natural resource extraction” (“Looking for edge, Maine plunges into Arctic policy,” March 30), then good journalistic practice means you owe readers a story about the unprecedented weather, social and political ramifications of such an event.

Plenty of credible information from scientists and security analysts is available online. For starters, the website resilience.org has these two articles: “Scientists Predicted A Decade Ago Arctic Ice Loss Would Worsen Western Droughts. Is That Happening Already?” and “The warming Arctic: a hyper strategic crisis.”
