The proposed rezoning of the 58 Fore St. property in Portland could be another Union Station moment for the city.

The quest for urban revitalization is leading to gentrification. If the zoning has none of the restrictions recommended by the Soul of Portland group, it will be talked about for years to come: “What a tragedy it was tearing down those beautiful old buildings in the name of urban development and tax revenue. In exchange we got condos that most here can’t afford and brew pubs that charge $10 for a cold one just to enjoy a look at the water and boats like the Tall Ships.”

Yes, the Portland Co. buildings need some work, but in this day and age of “throw-away,” we current citizens should take stock in what this historical property has offered this city and honor it by saving all of it.

Refurbish the old buildings, keep the panoramic view by developing no higher than Fore Street so all can see Portland’s harbor as it opens to the Gulf of Maine and our beacon that shines from the Portland Head Light.

I observe people walking and jogging up and down Fore Street every day. It would be sad that one day they won’t be able to see the vibrant water activity from the sidewalk. Protect the Fore Street harbor view for all to see!
