NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — The University of Southern Maine baseball team needed 13 innings to win the second game and complete a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday.

USM (11-6, 2-2 Little East Conference) won the first game 12-6 and the second 5-4.

In the first game, Shyler Scates earned his third win of the season. He allowed 10 hits and one earned run, while walking one and striking out three in nine innings.

Southern Maine was down 3-0 after one inning, but scored seven runs in the second, including a two-run double by Nick DiBiase. Paul McDonough and Matt Bender also had RBI singles.

In the second game, USM scored two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. In the 13th, Sam Dexter walked and advanced to second on a one-out single by Bender. Dexter scored from second when Tyler Mezquita grounded out.

Senior Andrew Richards pitched the final eight innings to pick up his fifth win of the season. Andrews gave up four hits, walked two and struck out eight.

Eastern Connecticut falls to 6-9, 2-2).

COLBY SWEEPS TRINITY: Tommy Forese homered twice in the first of two wins for the Mules (11-4, 2-1 NESCAC) over the Bantams ( 9-7, 1-2) at Hartford, Connecticut.

The Mules took the first game 7-0 and completed the sweep with a 5-3 victory.

Soren Hanson gave up four hits, struck out six and walked two in the first game. Forese was 3 for 3 with two homers and a double.

In Game 2, Dan Csaplar went 3 for 4 with three RBI and a run scored. Tim Corey added a two-run triple. Greg Ladd lasted five inning to earn the win with two strikeouts and no walks.

ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS ALBERTUS MAGNUS: Dan Meeken pitched a one-hitter to give the Monks (12-10) the first of two victories over the Falcons (8-9), at Purchase, New York.

The Monks won the first game 3-2 and prevailed 6-2 in the second game.

Meeken struck out four, walked three and allowed two earned runs in his first game. Scott Betts drove in the winning run in the seventh with a single.

Brett Barbati drove in two runs for the Monks in the second game. Taylor Reuillard doubled, tripled, scored a run and drove in a run.

Starter Nick Malatesta went six innings to earn the win in the second game.

LACROSSE

ENDICOTT 16, BOWDOIN 3: The Polar Bears (1-9) were held scoreless for 54 minutes and the Gulls (8-2) posted a victory at Howard Ryan Field in Brunswick.

Harrison Cotter and Nick Pincairo each scored four goals for Endicott. Brandon Lee scored twice in the final six minutes for Bowdoin.

SOUTHERN MAINE 10, SALEM STATE 7: Jaymz McStowe scored three goals to help the the Huskies (5-2, 1-1 Little East) beat the Vikings (6-3, 1-1) at Salem, Massachusetts.

USM outscored Salem State, 3-0 in the second quarter to take a 4-3 lead. The Huskies then scored four times in the third quarter.

Zach Bessette and John Bossi combined to make 15 saves for the Huskies.

BATES 16, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 8: Charlie Fay and Jack Strain scored four goals apiece to lead the Bobcats (6-4, 3-4 NESCAC) over the Mules (2-9, 0-6), at New London, Connecticut.

Bates trailed 7-3 early in the second quarter, but held Connecticut College scoreless for 32 minutes and rallied.

Joe Faria finished with 14 saves. Sophomore Kyle Weber had two goals and four assists, while Jack Allard chipped in with three goals. Fay added three assists.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 14, NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE 9: David Rubenstein scored five goals as the Nor’easters (6-6) beat the Pilgrims (4-5) at Henniker, New Hampshire.

Dan Auger added three goals and two assists for the Nor’easters. UNE trailed 2-1 after the first quarter, but five different players scored for the Nor’easters in the second as they surged ahead for an 8-3 halftime lead.

RIVIER 13, ST. JOSEPH’S 3: Joe Kelland scored four goals as the Raiders (10-2, 2-2 GNAC) beat the Monks (5-5, 2-3) in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Rivier led 5-2 at halftime, then held the Monks scoreless until Jake O’Brien connected with 2:13 left. O’Brien finished with two goals for the Monks.

MIDDLEBURY 15, COLBY 12: Jon Broome had four goals and had two assists as the Panthers (9-2, 6-1 NESCAC) beat the Mules (6-4, 2-4), at Middlebury, Vermont.

Colby kept the game close, tying the score seven times and holding the lead for just over four minutes early in the second half.

Austin Sayre scored three goals for the Mules.
