LEWISTON — Jim Murphy, who guided Bates College to six berths in the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament, has decided to retire, the school announced Tuesday.

In 21 seasons as coach, Murphy, who is the longest-tenured coach in the 47-year history of the program, compiled a record of 343-187.

Murphy, a 1969 graduate of Bates and a native of Portland, played football and basketball as an undergraduate, and still owns the school record for touchdown passes in a career (50) and a single season (17). He also played varsity basketball with the Bobcats.

In addition to coaching women’s basketball, Murphy served as the college’s women’s soccer coach from 1994-2011 and finished with a career record of 146-93-13.

BASEBALL

SOUTHERN MAINE 17, HUSSON 3: Devin Warren went 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles, three RBI and three runs to pace a 20-hit offense for the Huskies (12-6), who cruised past the Eagles (14-8) at Bangor.

Sam Dexter and Nick DiBiase added three hits apiece for the Huskies while combining for five RBI and five runs.

SOFTBALL

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND, SALVE REGINA SPLIT: Amanda Vallante scored the tying run on a wild pitch and Cat Ouellette drove in the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk as the Nor’easters (12-9, 6-2 Commonwealth Coast) scored twice in the sixth inning to rally for a 5-4 win over the Seahawks (10-10, 6-2) in the second game at Biddeford.

Vallante had a pair of hits and scored twice for the Nor’easters, and Ouellette finished with two RBI.

In the opener, Salve Regina outhit the Nor’easters 14-10 while pulling away over the final three innings of an 11-3 victory.

BOWDOIN SWEEPS BATES: Julia Geaumont struck out six and walked two in a seven-hitter, and also doubled and homered to lead the Polar Bears (14-5, 3-0 NESCAC) to a 4-1 win over the Bobcats (1-12, 0-7) in the opener at Lewiston.

The Polar Bears completed the sweep with a 5-2 win behind Emily Griffin, who scattered eight hits and five walks, striking out nine.

Marisa O’Toole hit a two-run homer and finished with a pair of hits for Bowdoin, and Adriane Krul hit two doubles and scored twice.

ST. JOSEPH’S, SIMMONS SPLIT: Erica Boulanger had five strikeouts and no walks in a six-hitter to lift the Monks (15-5, 7-3 Great Northeast) to a 2-0 win over the Sharks (10-9, 7-3) in the second game at Standish.

St. Joseph’s opened the scoring on a single by Melissa Mayhew in the third inning and added a run on Shannon Laubauskas’ double in the fourth.

The Sharks won the opener, 5-1. Mayhew and Kim Jordan had two hits apiece, and Kelsy Gaddy added an RBI double for St. Joseph’s.

MEN’S LACROSSE

BATES 12, TUFTS 8: Charlie Fay scored five goals, and Jack Allard added four goals and an assist for the Bobcats (7-4, 4-4 NESCAC) against the Jumbos (10-1, 6-1) at Medford, Massachusetts.

Jack Strain chipped in two goals and an assist for Bates, which scored six straight goals during a stretch in the second and third periods for an 8-3 lead.

BOWDOIN 16, BABSON 11: Peter Reuter finished with four goals and an assist, and David Nemirov added three goals and two assists for the Polar Bears (2-9) in a victory against the Beavers (5-6) at Babson Park, Massachusetts.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

BOWDOIN 8, COLBY 7: Megan O’Connor scored two of her game-high three goals in the second half as the Polar Bears (9-2, 5-2 NESCAC) erased a 4-3 deficit against the Mules (9-3, 4-3) at Brunswick.
