A National Guardsman at a job fair I attended told me that, in his opinion, Maine has the exact right mix of units. There is a mountain infantry unit in Brewer, a transportation company in Sanford and the 133rd Engineers with companies spread all across Maine.

This give a flexibility of service for guardsmen while placing vitally important assets around the state and region in case of an natural disaster.

I hope that the composition we have stays exactly the same. After this awful winter, I would think the necessity of having soldiers who know how to operate a plow would be obvious.

The young soldier I spoke with had been involved in the deployment to Massachusetts, hauling heavy equipment to snow-stricken areas.

Certainly, engineer and truck units cost more in equipment maintenance and repair. But the return on the investment is well worth it.
