Re: “Maine lawmaker prepares ‘religious freedom’ bill despite national controversy” (April 3):
I was amazed to read that Sen. David Burns of Whiting plans to introduce a so-called “religious freedom” bill that would allow businesses to refuse service based on the business owner’s religious beliefs.
Perhaps Sen. Burns should apply to repaint our governor’s foolish highway signs proclaiming “Welcome To Maine: Open For Business” to add the clause: “except for gays, lesbians and any other people whose beliefs our religion opposes.”
Do we want Maine to suffer the same embarrassment and scorn directed at Indiana and Arkansas, to say nothing of the opposition of the leaders of many enlightened Maine businesses, e.g., L.L. Bean, Hannaford, Central Maine Power, Idexx and Wex?
