STANDISH — Courtney Davis and Ally Pillar drove in three runs each Wednesday to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 9-1 victory against Bowdoin in a six-inning opener of a nonconference softball doubleheader.

Bowdoin won the second game 12-4 in five innings.

In the opener, the Huskies (14-8) took control with a six-run fourth. USM ended the game with an eight-run lead in the sixth, on a sacrifice fly by Davis and RBI single by Kristen Duross.

In the second game, the Polar Bears (15-6) scored nine runs in the first inning, five unearned. Marissa O’Toole hit a three-run homer in the top of the fifth for a 12-1 lead and USM fell a run short of keeping the game alive with a three-run bottom of the fifth.

HUSSON SWEEPS COLBY: Kayla Merrill (4-3) allowed five hits in the first game to secure the first of two victories for Husson (9-7) against Colby (5-11) at Bangor. The Eagles won the second game, 3-2.

In the second game, Husson scored two runs on an error in the first inning and Merrill scored on a wild pitch in the fifth for a 3-0 lead. The Mules scored twice in the sixth. Meaghan Lewia stroked an RBI double and scored on a fielder’s choice.

BASEBALL

UM-FARMINGTON 6, BATES 4: Reliever Joe Sullivan struck out the final batter with the tying run on second base as UM-Farmington (9-4) downed Bates (6-8) at Lewiston.

The Beavers took advantage of five errors, including three in the fifth, when they scored four runs for a 5-0 lead.

MAINE 9, THOMAS 2: Luke Morrill, Brett Chappell and Brenden Geary all drove in runs in the fourth inning to help the Black Bears (10-17) defeat Thomas (4-11) at Orono.

Nik Beeson hit an RBI single in the first and Anree Benitez scored on a sacrifice fly in the third inning after hitting a triple. The Black Bears added four runs in the seventh on four hits and two errors.

SOUTHERN MAINE 10, ST. JOSEPH’S 1: Keegan Smith had two goals and three assists to lead the University of Southern Maine (6-2) over St. Joseph’s (5-6) at Gorham.

Eddie Barrasso and Seth Wing scored three goals each for Southern Maine, which held the Monks scoreless until the final eight seconds of the third quarter when Matt Donnell scored.

ENDICOTT 20, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 8: Nick Pinciaro scored five goals and Kyle Weber added four as Endicott (9-2, 4-0 Commonwealth Coast) beat UNE (6-7, 1-3) at Biddeford.

Sam Cloutier and Andrew Curro paced the Nor’easters with two goals each. Endicott outscored UNE 6-0 in the first quarter and 10-2 in the second.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

ENDICOTT 12, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 11: Emily Whitney scored back-to-back goals just over a minute apart to help Endicott (7-4, 3-1 Commonwealth Coast) edge the University of New England (5-7, 2-2) at Biddeford.

With the score 10-10, Whitney scored unassisted with 6:27 left. She added a goal 1:18 later from Sin Mason. Nikki Smith scored for the Nor’easters with two minutes remaining.

ST. JOSEPH’S 21, RIVIER 7: Mary Leasure and Lizzie Calnan scored four goals apiece to lead St. Joseph’s (10-1, 7-0 Great Northeast) against Rivier (4-8, 3-4) at Portland.

The Monks scored seven straight goals for an 8-1 lead with 19:03 left in the half. Leasure scored the first two goals of the second half for the Monks and set up a third by Kelsey Dumond for a 12-goal lead with 21:34 to play.
